Cathode ray tubes
ignite electric beams
vibrating between
magnetic resistance. Bodies,
arms, legs, interlaced
in the rhythmic flicker;
its refresh rate barely
able to keep up.

So you want
a revolution, seduced
by its adulterous appeal.

Sing a song for the computer age.
Dance to the digitized
frequency modulated airwaves.
Make love
to you pixel technography
while your wife
waits

in the next room
patiently painting her nails and pondering
your wedding day.

Task... This poem does allow me to form my own conclusion and in doing so, it inspires me to puzzle over the pieces.

This has me seeing the computer as a mistress that can give you the world... a wedge between a husband and wife. How else would it be possible for a wife to patiently wait for her husband's (next) wedding day?

Very pixelesque and your line breaks are keen.

Cary...

Kevin,

A lot of truth in that last sentence.

Quite a punch in the stomach to internet porn and those obsessed with it, Kevin. A lot of internet "widows" are going to be impressed with this poem. Thanks for sharing.

A very insightful poem Kevin. Just a bit uncertain about the reference to the wife. Why does she ponder his wedding day? Is this in reference to his wedding the sites (an ironic jibe) or is this his fiance thinking about the wedding day while he spends his time on the porn sites? Probably the prior assessment but just checkin.

Well, it's not meant to be specifically about internet porn, though on a certain level that is certainly part of it. To me this poem is about the de-humanizing of the human experience. The wife figure representing the human experience and the regret she feels. Also a warning not to lose touch with what makes us human such as personal relationships. You can see examples of a “counter-revolution” in the “old school” movement. Vinyl LP’s are becoming popular again because of their rich sound, vacuum tube electronics are in vogue for the same reason. Mechanical watches are benefiting from a renaissance. I suppose one could write a dissertation on the subject if they felt like it. I guess it’s also a longing for simpler times.

Enjoyed as well, Kevin. Especially:

"its refresh rate barely
able to keep up."

Appreciated your explanation as well and it was pretty much how I originally interpreted its meaning. Thanks for the verification. One final note, however, "love in a vacuum" will never replace "love with a vacuum (cleaner)." Now that's perverse - but only in some segments of our society. I'm sure a few will always disagree.
